Side Effects of Watching Winter Soldier in 3D Late at Night

The latest Captain America is, of course, intense. Watching it late at night in 3D intensifies that. How much? Consider the following truths:

  1. The only other guy watching the showing I attended sat down directly behind me, two rows back. I spent parts of the movie waiting for his garrote or knife attack.
  2. I felt the need to run full tilt through the exit doors to knock down whoever was waiting on the other side with drawn weapons.
  3. I needed to scan the parking lot on the way to my car.
  4. I might have flinched as I opened the car door, waiting for an explosion or attack.
  5. I wanted to tear out of the parking lot to not be an easy target like Fury's car.
  6. I really wanted an EMP to take out my house's outside lights so I could sneak in.
  7. I wanted to creep through my darkened house, stealthily closing blinds while staying out of view through the windows.
  8. I want as little light inside the house as possible.

I will say that some subset of these happened. I have (so far) not been taken by-- or even engaged-- anyone: SHIELD, Hydra, Wilco Sheriffs, or my neighbors.

It's going to be a long night.

Blowing up Syria... and the World. Why?

In May, a UN investigator stated that the rebels were at fault for the chemical weapons used in Syria. In July, Russia handed the UN a 100 page report backing this (no, I haven't seen it). Some source or sources apparently claimed it was not an attack, but a mishap while handling the weapons. I have heard interviews on NPR with rebels who claim that al-Quaeda related groups had them moving the weapons without telling them what they were transporting.

What is the truth here? I have no idea. (If you claim to, you better provide some rock solid evidence.)

The President claims he will explain to us Tuesday night why we need to attack the Syrian regime. He will "lay it all out".

Questions for the President... and you:

  • Why couldn't he lay it out before? (Perhaps that will be answered. Given his track record, I sincerely doubt it.)
  • Why has he not said ONE WORD about the evidence that it was the rebels? If only to dismiss it?
  • Why has he steadfastly refused to answer the question, "If Congress does not approve the attack on Syria, do you intent to attack, anyway?" I heard one of his non-answers in entirety on NPR. They reported he did the same thing when asked in Russia. He "very frankly" talked about how he fully expected Congress to approve it. he did not even come close to answering the question.
  • Why... WHY... does he think we can lob cruise missiles at Syria and not see retaliation? (Assuming we have incontrovertible truth it was the regime who used CWs.)
  • It keeps coming back to the red line he drew in the sand, which he now refuses to admit he drew, but which he feels obligated to defend (although he now blames Congress and "the world" for that line). Do you really want a President to drag us into another mid-east (or any) war because of his own pride, insecurity, arrogance, cluelessness, or whatever combination of problems this is?

Let Congress know what you're thinking. let the President know. Those of you who believe in God, pray. Hard.

And love your neighbor, including the one who supports the President no matter what. We as a country have been divided and conquered from within far too long.

The Roadkills-R-Us 21st Century Debate Format

I have a great idea for future debates. This would keep things more on track.

Put a panel of three high school debate teachers on the stage. Each has two Big Red Buttons and two Big Green Buttons in front of them.

Above each candidate's head is a flat panel with a big, red letter grade. Each candidate starts with an "A+". (We could start with a 100, but there's an advantage to the letter.)

When a candidate breaks the rules of the debate (goes over time, fails to obey the moderator, etc), a debate judge can hit that candidate's Big Red Button. At that point that candidate's grade drops a mark (A+ to A to A- to B+ to B, etc.) Unless both the other judges press that candidate's Big Green Buttons within, say, 10 seconds, the drop stays. Once a candidate hits "F" the debate is over and they have officially LOST.

Using letters keeps the range short and sweet. Twelve dings is more than enough.

Under this system a candidate would be penalized the same for refusing to stop when the time was up, interrupting, or running across the stage and taking out their opponent with a flying tackle the way CONTROL's Chief attacked the Vice President in the Get Smart movie. I think we could use more of that. Not enough to bump it up a mark, although that's tempting...

There you have it: the Roadkills-R-Us 21st Century Debate format. Please write everyone you can think of in the media, blogosphere, Congress, or United Nations and demand this be used from now on (for UN debates as well!)
